Edinburgh West MP and Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Christine Jardine MP said the latest announcement of redundancies in the aviation industry is further evidence of the need for furlough to continue and called for assurances over jobs in Edinburgh.
Menzies Aviation, which provides services at Edinburgh airport and is based in Jardine’s constituency Today issued redundancy notices to 1,050 employees at Heathrow Airport because of the impact of the pandemic.
The Liberal Democrats have called on the Government to extend the furlough scheme “for all those who need it” until the end of June 2021, to avoid mass unemployment, accelerate the UK’s recovery and transition to a new greener economy.
Following the announcement, Ms Jardine said: “I’m extremely concerned by Menzies redundancy announcement and the implications this could have on jobs at Menzies headquarters in Edinburgh, as well as at Edinburgh Airport.
“I have asked to speak to the company to see how I can support the case for support.
“Edinburgh Airport is one of the largest employers in my constituency, but countless others across the country also rely on it to operate.
“Surely this is more evidence that the furlough scheme needs extending?”
