Bryan Cameron, Fife Flyers, latest signing, admitted that having Scottish ancestry was a major factor in his signing for the Kirkcaldy club writes Nigel Duncan.
The grandfather of the former Los Angeles Kings draft pick, who was later signed by Calgary Flames, comes from Edinburgh and Cameron makes his debut for flagging Flyers at Manchester Storm on Saturday (face-off 7pm).
The forward, who iced in several exhibition games in the National Hockey League, the world’s top division, admitted he got a taste for the big time.
Now, however, the forward wants to help Fife find some consistency and to move up the ten-strong Elite League table.
Cameron watched Monday’s 4-1 home defeat by Scottish rivals Braehead Clan and admitted he knows some of the faces in Fife’s dressing-room.
He said: “I played with Shane Owen (Fife’s highly-rated netminder) back home and know how good he is.I also know (Richard) Jackman and (Mathew) Sisca so it was good to speak to them about the club.
“I’m pleased to be bere and want to get started. I’ve got several days to get acclimatised but it’s been a long travel to get here and so it will be good to get a week of practice before making my debut.”
Cameron comes well-recommended with a good goal-scoring record. The Canadian was second top points scorer at Arizona where he was a team-mate of David Rutherford, a former Edinburgh Capitals player who is now starring with Belfast Giants.
He added: “My grandfather came from Edinburgh so ancestry was one reason to come over. I’d always thought about playing here at some point and this move has come at the right time.”
