Although it is not yet built the £7.3 million health centre known as Firrhill Partnership Centre will now be known as Allermuir Health Centre after one of the famous hills of the Pentlands which is visible from the site. The public voted for the new name.
Work on the centre started earlier this month and it will open to patients in summer 2017.
It will provide new and improved space for a range of community health services as well as better accommodation for the Craiglockhart and Firrhill Medical Practices.
Over 30 names were suggested by local people and the top three were then shortlisted. Around 100 people then voted on their favourite with Allermuir coming out on top.
Jim Cowan – a GP in one of the practices moving to the Centre – proposed the name and is delighted that the public agreed with his suggestion.
He said: “You can see right across Edinburgh from the top of Allermuir Hill and I thought it would be a suitable name for the new Health Centre.”
Robert McCulloch-Graham, Chief Officer, Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “This has been a great piece of work to involve local people in the name of their new health centre.
“It’s a great name for the new centre. It’s an iconic landmark on the skyline and will serve the new Centre well for many years to come.
“Allermuir Health Centre will bring together health and social care services in one place. Helping them to work better together and improving how services operate for patients and service users in the local communities.
“This is another good example of an effective partnership approach, good for people and good for improving health in Edinburgh.”
