FREE PIC- Royal Scottish Academy Schools Arts Award 01

Katie Corrie from Linlithgow Academy, West Lothian, collected the “Chairmen’s Chalenge” special award at the Friends of the Royal Scottish Academy Schools Arts Awards.

Her photograph of a wet cobbled street won the ‘pictured by a mobile phone camera’ Chairmen’s Challenge.

The works produced by school pupils included classically-inspires canvasses to striking images taken on smartphones.

The 2016 Art Awards Ceremony took place in the RSA Galleries when 25 students were presented with cash prizes and a further 62 pupils who were given Highly Commended certificates.

Brodies LLP have sponsored the event which allowed extra awards for special schools to be included for the first time.

Christine O’Neill, Chairman of Brodies LLP, who presented the prizes, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be working with the Friends of the Royal Scottish Academy on the 2016 School Art Awards. Many of my colleagues and I have been involved in judging this year’s entries and we have been extremely impressed by the exceptional skill and talent demonstrated by the young people involved.

“Brodies has for many years supported school projects that encourage and develop young people’s talents, whether in sport, art or educational attainment, and we are pleased that our support for these awards has extended their reach across Scotland and encouraged pupils of all ages and backgrounds to get involved and produce such inspirational work.”

Lindsey Michie, Chairman of the Friends of the Royal Scottish Academy, said: “It’s clear that including a Smartphone picture element to the competition has broken down barriers to entry. What’s even more exciting is that the simple act of taking part in the competition brings a new visual awareness to many young people.”  She added: “We are hugely grateful for the support from Brodies LLP, without whom the award would not be possible.”

President of the Royal Scottish Academy, Arthur Watson said: “The judging panel were very impressed with the creative talent evident in the entries received.”

The annual awards attracted school entries from across Scotland – as far north as Dingwall and as far south as Hawick.
