Key safes can be invaluable for older people and the disabled providing many benefits for those who are vulnerable, as well as their carers and loved ones. No longer does the door need to be left off the latch to allow entry, as those who need to get in have the code for the key safe.

Now an Edinburgh charity dedicated to enabling older people and people with disabilities to continue to live independently and safely in their own homes has added a dedicated key safe fitter to further extend the range of services it provides.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2015, Care and Repair Edinburgh offers a range of services from small DIY repairs carried out for free by volunteers to larger domestic improvements and home-from-hospital adaptations, arranged via its trades list of trusted professionals.

The charity has ramped up its activities in 2015 with the addition of a gas services contract and now the appointment of Andrew Finlayson as a full time dedicated key safe fitter.

Andrew will fit key safes for any Care and Repair Edinburgh client requiring one.  The charity is working closely with NHS Lothian and the City of Edinburgh Council to assist with hospital discharges and installation of a key safe can play an important part in enabling someone to get home.

Graham Harper, CEO of Care and Repair Edinburgh said: “A key safe is a strong mechanical metal box that securely stores the key to your door inside. It is installed into brick or concrete on the outside of your property and keys are accessed by a combination code known only by the householder and those who need to know.

“Having a police approved standard key safe installed assists vulnerable people knowing that carers and loved ones have access to the front door key. It reduces the need to keep answering the front door and provides quick entry to the house in any emergency such as a fall or non-response. It also helps by reducing the number of keys and keyholders so improves security.”
