The council is running a consultation on the draft budget which it is proposing for the next four years.

It is a difficult time for all 32 local authorities in Scotland as their income is frozen at the same time as demand for services is increasing.

In the first of a mini series we interviewed the Transport Convener yesterday afternoon about the way the city spends money on transport and environment.

You can read watch the interview in full here. It is a little longer than our usual interviews but we are planning to give you as much information as possible so that you can then add your comments to the consultation here.

The Scottish weather may be turning a little wintry, but this week Edinburgh Gilbert and Sullivan Society can transport you to warmer climes with its new production of South Pacific. Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, “Tales of the South Pacific” by James A. Michener, South Pacific focuses on a group of American sailors and nurses stationed on an idyllic island during World War II.

Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with middle-aged French plantation owner Emile, but is shocked when she discovers that he has mixed-race children from his first marriage.

Meanwhile, U.S. Lieutenant Cable falls for a beautiful island native named Liat. Both Americans find themselves struggling to reconcile their own cultural prejudices in this epic tale of romance and war.

The fully choreographed show will feature a cast of over 40 local amateur performers, accompanied by an orchestra and under the direction of Alan Borthwick & David Lyle. With world famous numbers including “I’m gonna wash that man right outta my hair”, “Some enchanted evening”, “There is nothing like a dame” and “I’m in love with a wonderful guy”, this perennial favourite is not to be missed!

The show opens tonight at 7.30pm at the Church Hill Theatre in Morningside Road, with further performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and a matinee at 2.30pm on Saturday.

Tickets may be purchased from the Usher Hall Box Office, Lothian Road, in person, by calling 0131 228 1155 or online here.

The City of Edinburgh has a Music School and they are holding an open day soon. You are invited along if you would like to know more about the courses they offer.

Edinburgh College sports staff and students will be passing on their skills to the younger generation as they start Saturday morning football training for children this weekend.

Students from HN Sports Coaching and SVQ Sports Leadership Activity will be helping lecturer Emily Grant to train up children from 3-11 in football skills. Spaces are still available for children to join these classes.

The training sessions will take place on Saturday mornings in the sports hall in the Centre for Sport and Fitness at Edinburgh College’s Sighthill Campus, and start on 31 October 2015.

Introduction to football training for pre-school children (3-5 years) will run at 9:30-10:30am and fun football skills classes for school children (5-11 years) will run from 10:30-11:30am. The training costs £2 per child per session.
