The City of Edinburgh council plans to reduce carbon emissions in the city by 42% in the next five years. Some of the ways it will do that are due to be discussed at the Corporate Policy and Strategy committee meeting next Tuesday.
The work will be split into five separate areas including energy efficiency, renewables, district heating, resource efficiency and sustainable transport.
The council will report each year on its progress, and admits that the goal is not easy to achieve. It is a statutory duty owing to the Scottish Government’s demand that local authorities report their carbon emissions.
Street lights and stair lighting will be replaced with LED lights but retrofitting some existing buildings in the city with low carbon solutions will pose a challenge so the council will start with the biggest public sector buildings first.
The consultation which took place last year involved community councils and other interested bodies and it will be important to get them to sign up to the new plans to ensure that they are implemented.
Plans are announced for an annual Energy Fair which will allow community renewable groups to get advice on their projects and a bold target of 15% of all commutes to be carried out on bikes by 2020 is set out in the plan. Energy for Edinburgh will be established this year to progress a range of key energy projects in the capital.
The draft plan is reproduced here.

Assembly Roxy is delighted to announce some of their upcoming programme of exceptional theatre as they bring a few Fringe favourites back to Edinburgh this spring.
The spring season kicks off with Lucy Porter’s sell-out play The Fair Intellectual Club (3-4 March), reuniting the original cast (Caroline Deyga, Jessica Hardwick and Samara MacLaren) and director (Marilyn Imrie) from their critically acclaimed Fringe run. Inspired by the real-life Edinburgh Club founded by a group of young ladies at the dawn of the Scottish Enlightenment, Porter’s funny, challenging and moving tale of teenage love, friendship and betrayal is based on the Fair Intellectual Club’s original manuscripts and provides a fascinating insight into a revolutionary period in Scottish history.
