All P1 to P3 pupils attending Scottish schools will today become entitled to free school meals. The full details are here.
The move will offer a meal to around 135,000 school pupils and the Scottish Government reckon that it will save families around £330 per year.

There will be little take-up taking into consideration that most parents are too proud
to admit they are poor enough not to provide for their off-spring. Best include all primary school children to ensure full take-up of the grant.
But surely the point is that this is universally available to all school children in P1 to P3 and is not dependent on means at all? So does that not remove the perceived stigma of being so poor you have to have school meals? Schools appear to be encouraging as many pupils as possible to register for the service.
Good point but after p3 year, the need for means returns, my point is free school meals
should be available for all primary school children. The cost for the current scheme
would probably suffice.
Ah yes I agree wholeheartedly with that. But nonetheless a good start?
A good start but the number of teachers still need to be funded.
