Two police firearms officers and two off duty Fire Fighters have been nominated for an award for saving the life of a driver involved in a collision on Queensferry Road in Edinburgh last week.
A 70-year-old man was driving his Volvo on Friday 28th November when he suffered cardiac arrest, causing his vehicle to leave the road and collide with a lamppost.
The fire fighters witnessed the collision and stopped to assist by commencing CPR.
Shortly thereafter, two Constables who were on routine patrol within an Armed Response Vehicle heard the call and also responded the scene to assist.
Upon their arrival they continued first aid and utilised their defibrillator on the man until the Scottish Ambulance Service arrived.
The man was taken to hospital and continues to recover following this incident. Two female passengers who were also within the car suffered minor injuries.
Chief Superintendent Elaine Ferguson, Specialist Services Commander, said: “The officers within the ARV heard their colleagues reporting concerns for the man’s health and quickly arrived at the scene to assist.
“Thanks to their swift response and the vital actions of the off duty fire fighters, the treatment they administered saved the driver’s life.
“I am delighted that these officers have now been nominated for an award as recognition for their professionalism in assisting a member of public in their time of need.”
The officers do not wish to be identified.
