Johnston Press to merge three Edinburgh newspapers
Concert at St Giles
Edinburgh Art Fair
Botanic Lights
The Edinburgh Award
Media commentators report that Johnston Press has decided to merge The Edinburgh Evening News with its sister papers Scotland on Sunday and The Scotsman.
The Drum explains that the branding of all three papers will remain distinct and separate but they will be managed by a single editorial team from March next year. This follows the refinancing of the group with a £360m package earlier this year.

Botanic Lights is now on at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh from today. The gates will open to the public after dark from tonight. The Edinburgh Reporter was there yesterday evening and though we really wanted to like it we were left a little puzzled. True the lights are pretty, and it changes the look and feel of the garden (Who would have thought of walking through the Botanics after dark before?) but we think that we may have to go back again to understand whether this is meant to be a walk or a spectacle.
For photographers it was difficult to take in what was happening at the same time as taking any decent photographs. It would have been enterprising if some high level platforms had been erected to allow for some different shots and angles. You will have to make do with taking a ‘framed photo’ of the Castle through the oversized printer frame which is set up for the purpose. Then you can perhaps let us know what you think about it. Oh and wear suitable footwear and wrap up warm!

First launched in 2007, the Edinburgh Award is a way for Edinburgh citizens to pay a lasting tribute to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the city through their achievements.
Past recipients include authors JK Rowling and Ian Rankin, sports stars Sir Chris Hoy and George Kerr, scientist Professor Peter Higgs and artist Elizabeth Blackadder – each of whom has a cast of their handprints imprinted in flagstones in front of the Capital’s City Chambers.
Nominations are sought annually from communities, businesses and individuals across Edinburgh and the winner is selected by a panel chaired by the Lord Provost.
The Rt Hon Donald Wilson, Lord Provost, said: “The Edinburgh Award is a coveted accolade and celebrates those people who have been outstanding ambassadors for the city at home and throughout the world.
“If you know somebody who should have this award get involved and nominate them now. In addition to the award itself the recipients have their handprints embedded into the stones in the City Chambers Quadrangle, providing a visual and lasting tribute to their contribution to this great city. We all have people in mind that we think are deserving so make sure you get online and make your views known.”
Nominations are now open and can be made online at www.edinburgh.gov.uk/edinburghaward and must be received no later than Thursday 27 November 2014. Postal nominations are also available.
The recipient will be presented with an engraved Loving Cup by the Lord Provost at a ceremony early next year.
