Lochend boxer Josh Taylor won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games 64kg category after beating Namibia’s Junias Jonas by a unanimous decision at the SSE Hydro in front of a capacity 10,000 spectators this afternoon.

23 year old Josh who won silver in the 60kg weight category four years ago in Delhi as a teenager, reached the final after a unanimous victory over Englishman Samuel Maxwell at the SECC Precinct yesterday.

After winning all three rounds the delighted boxer said: “My family are over the moon and so am I. Brilliant. When I walked into the ring, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. E went to the Olympics in London, but that (The Scottish Crowd) was just unbelievable. I knew that I had the two rounds in the bag, so I just wanted to keep safe and secure the gold. I’ve dreamt of this for years and I can’t wait to stand on the podium. This is great for amateur boxing in Scotland as well.”
