A fascinating exhibition which showcases the big names of Scottish comedy in the twentieth century will end its popular run at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery on 11 May.  Tickling Jock: Comedy Greats from Sir Harry Lauder to Billy Connolly, supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, brings together images of 50 stars including Lex McLean, John Laurie, Molly Weir, Rikki Fulton, Jack Milroy, Stanley Baxter, Johnny Beattie, Una Maclean and Ronnie Corbett, to celebrate Scotland’s distinctive contribution to the world of entertainment.

Opening with a recording of Harry Lauder’s 1904 song ‘Stop Yer Tickling Jock’, the exhibition includes paintings, photographs, sculptures and archival material, shedding an intriguing light on the country’s comic traditions between 1900 and 1975.

Works from the Gallery’s collections hang alongside significant loans from the Scottish Theatre Archive (University of Glasgow), the Citizens Theatre and the King’s Theatre, Glasgow, as well as from private owners.

Imogen Gibbon, Chief Curator and Deputy Director of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery said: ‘This exhibition offers an exciting opportunity for visitors to discover Scotland’s distinctive contribution to the world of entertainment in the twentieth century. It has already proved popular with both young and older audiences, encouraging inter-generational dialogue. Why not come and step into the spotlight for yourself by entering the On Air booths to listen and watch comedy clips, or become a Tickling Jock by leaving a recording of a comedy performance.’
