Police Scotland are investigating after a fire broke out in a stair in Gorgie.

The incident happened around 00.30am today (Sunday) within a common stair at Westfield Road.

Occupants of the flat block reported the fire starting inside a cupboard in the stairwell and police and fire service were in attendance.

Four residents were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for smoke inhalation. However, there is no concern for their conditions.

Officers believe the fire was started deliberately and anyone who can assist with their enquiries is asked to come forward.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Fortunately, no one was seriously injured as a result of this incident and officers are now conducting local enquiries to identify whoever was responsible for starting the fire.

“Anyone who remembers seeing anything suspicious in the Westfield Road area in the early hours of Sunday morning should contact police immediately.

“Similarly, anyone with any further information relevant to this investigation is also asked to get in touch.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
