OFFICIAL EDINBURGH VERSION OF CLUEDO LAUNCHED TODAY
But a ‘Banker’ character touted during public polling proves TOO unpopular to feature, even in a murder, mystery game.
An official Cluedo board for Edinburgh, launched and going on shop shelves tomorrow (Thursday), will feature characters voted by the great Edinburgh public – but a ‘Banker’ character, which was much touted during public polling, has proved TOO unpopular to feature, even in a murder mystery board game.
The unique board is the very first UK regional Cluedo set outside of London and features six characters that “define“ Scotland’s capital including ‘The Politician’, ‘The Writer’ and The Zookeeper’. Edinburgh beat off competition from the likes of Dublin, Glasgow and Manchester to land the official board.
There has been much media speculation that a ‘Banker’ character would appear as one of the leading suspects after public polling was opened for the six customised characters in July (2013). That’s taking into account Edinburgh’s worldwide financial cachet.
But in the end no banker appears.
The makers stress they were at pains to make the board “reflect popular public feeling”. In this version of the game the murder takes place at one of these world-famous Edinburgh landmarks.
So it is possible in this version that Alec Mustard, the politician, has committed murder with a candlestick at Holyrood.
This is one of 324 possible combinations.
Mr Taylor, Head of Custom Games at Winning Moves – makers of this board game under license from Hasbro – says: “This board defines the vibrant Edinburgh of today and mirrors public feeling.”
And the board is being praised and hailed as a tourism boost for Scotland’s capital. Cllr Frank Ross, Convener of the Economy Committee, said:- “It’s great news for Scotland’s capital city. Edinburgh with its Old Town and New Town, its elegant mansions and its history, is the perfect backdrop for Cluedo. I am sure it will be a big hit.”
In the original Cluedo, invented in 1943 by a Birmingham solicitor’s clerk, these were the characters: Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlett, Mrs Peacock, Reverend Green, Mrs White and Professor Plum. In this version the six characters are:
Alec Mustard – ‘The Politician’.
Mrs Morningside-Peacock – ‘The Socialite’.
Kathleen White – ‘The Writer.
Professor Emmett Plum – ‘The Professor’.
Gillespie Green – ‘The Zookeeper’.
Poppy Scarlett – ‘The Student’.
Cluedo: Edinburgh Edition goes on sale from today at Jenners, John Lewis, The Works, Waitrose, Waterstones, WH Smith and all good toy and book stores – as well as online retailers.
