1 YEAR TO ‘INDYREF’ – PROGRESSIVE IDEAS CAN HELP WIN THE DAY

Ahead of a Scottish Parliament debate at 2pm this afternoon marking a year to go to the independence referendum, Scottish Greens are calling on both sides to use the coming twelve months to pursue progressive ideas.

In the coming weeks Scottish Greens will add more definition to their vision for an independent Scotland using their party conference in Inverness next month (5-6 October), by responding to the Government’s White Paper and by hosting a distinctive Green Yes event later in the autumn.

PatrickHarvieMSP20110510Patrick Harvie, Green MSP for Glasgow and Co-convener of the Scottish Greens, said:-

“Over the next year we must inspire the public with ideas, whether it’s drawing up a constitution, pursuing different economic models or creating a fairer welfare system funded from progressive taxation. And to those who agree with those progressive ideas but think independence would abandon our friends south of the border I would say think again. By prioritising a more equal and democratic society Scotland would show that real change is possible.

“In the coming months Scottish Greens will continue to engage with undecided voters. The prospect of taking responsibility for areas such as welfare, taxation, defence and foreign policy opens up the possibility of real change, while a No vote does not.”
