RAF Leuchars is pleased to announce two additions to the aircraft displays today as part of the RAF Leuchars Jubilee Airshow: A Diamond Celebration.

In addition to the United States Air Force B-52 Stratofortress already confirmed in the static display, a second B-52 will fly at the show. A giant of the skies with a wingspan of 185 ft, the B-52 has been in continuous service with the United States Air Force since 1955 and has seen operational service   throughout the Cold War and over Iraq and Afghanistan.

An RAF E-3D Sentry aircraft will also take to the air as part of the flying display, with its distinctive rotating radar dome located above the fuselage. The E-3D will join the show from its base at RAF Waddington where it performs airborne surveillance and command and control roles for the Royal Air Force. Recent operational service has included participation in Op ELLAMY to enforce the no-fly zone over Libya and Op OLYMPICS to provide to provide safe and secure London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games.

Airshow Executive, Wing Commander Neville Clayton, Officer Commanding Base Support Wing, at RAF Leuchars said:

“The presence of the B-52 and E-3D Sentry aircraft together at our Jubilee Airshow recognises the close links between the Armed Forces of the United Kingdom and its allies during Her Majesty The Queen’s 60-year reign. Right now, our Armed Forces are a part of the United Nations mandated and NATO-led international mission to provide a stable Afghanistan with its own strong and capable Afghan National Security Forces.

The public at the Airshow on Saturday  will have a chance to see both of these magnificent aircraft in flight and take a closer look while they are in the static display.”

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) and the Red Arrows will provide pageantry and panache to the skies over Fife today as well.

The Reporter is sorry that we cannot go to the airshow today….but if you have photos maybe you would like to share them with us?
