Edinburgh v Northampton, Pre-season Friendly, 24 August 2012
What a game! But, for a different reason to the 48-47 ‘Match of the Season’ against Racing Metro last year. With the quality-laden visitors scoring inside the first ten minutes with an, almost, undefended try, the crowd weren’t too worried. However it didn’t take long for them to worry a bit more. In spite of an answering penalty within a few minutes of the try, the home team just didn’t look like being able to cross the try-line.
Individual performances from one or two of the ‘new boys’, especially scrum half, Richie Rees, gave a bit of a lift, but an almost undefended second try from Northampton before the interval seemed to take the wind out of the sails of the, admittedly fairly second-string, home side and the second half was all Northampton, with the visitors seeming to be able to score at will. Edinburgh did have a couple of breaks early on, but were easily held out.
The fairly dreary ‘match’ ended 54 points to 3 in favour of the visitors, with a rather disgruntled 3,000+ home fans hoping for better things from the RaboDirect league opener against Munster next time out (1st September, 8:00pm).
