Court of Session hearing about Rosebank takes place today
An action has been raised in the Court of Session by Uplift and Greenpeace against the UK Government’s decision to approve drilling in the Rosebank field.
The hearing is today and it is expected that there will be a substantial protest outside the court in support of the environmental groups. If the groups win then the government would have to start the approval process for Rosebank all over again, but Friends of the Earth say that Ministers would have to take account of emissions from burning the oil as well as extracting it, and also the marine impacts of the field.
Supermoon
This is not exclusively Edinburgh news but there is a Beaver Supermoon on Friday night.
This is the final full moon for 2024 and although the moon will appear quite large all week it is going to be the smallest of the year. A Supermoon is not an official term but it means the moon is full when the moon is at its closest point in its elliptical orbit – the perigee – which is about 226,000 miles of so from Earth.
Also on Sunday there will be a chance to see the Leonid Meteor Shower (which is a good opportunity to mention Local Hero for no other reason than there is a meteor shower in the film…)

Merchiston Community Council leaf clearing scheme
Merchiston Community Council’s (MCC) scheme encourages residents to clear the leaves away from the roads and pavements near their homes.
A spokesperson said: “Fallen leaves, when they get wet, are a serious slip hazard for pedestrians, while a problem for everybody is that gutters and drains become completely blocked. If you would like to be part of this scheme, which is run as a collaboration between MCC and Edinburgh City Council, send us a message us at the email address below and we will tell you where to pick up the necessary tools (shovel, brush, supply of sturdy refuse sacks) and where to leave your filled sacks for the Council to collect. None of this will cost you anything, and you will be making a significant and valuable contribution to the amenity of your neighbourhood.”

Colinton/Fairmilehead By-Election
Polling stations will be open on Thursday 14 November from 7am to 10pm at:
- Charwood
- Fairmilehead Parish Church Hall
- St. Cuthbert’s Episcopal Church Hall
- Oxgangs Neighbourhood Centre
- Pentland Community Centre
Anyone living in the area who is aged 16 or over and has registered can vote in the by-election, and votes can be cast by post or by proxy if more convenient.
The electronic election count will take place on Friday 15 November starting at 9:30am.
