An Edinburgh-based honey has been revealed as a world-leading superfood in a recent scientific study.
The Scottish Bee Company’s heather honey contains up to ten times more of the essential micronutrient, manganese, an essential mineral with high antioxidant qualities.
Researchers teamed up with the company to investigate the nutritional content of the honey which is produced in the Lothians, Dumfriesshire, Stirlingshire, Fife and Aberdeenshire.
The bee company was founded by Iain and Suzie Millar three years ago out of a love of the honey bee and the couple were saddened by the continually documented decline in the bee population.
Suzie said: “It’s been remarkable to see the results of the scientific analysis and what’s even more exciting is that it doesn’t need to be imported from other countries.”
