There has been a sewage leak on Fernieside Recreation Ground in South Edinburgh which has had some attention today from both Scottish Water and the council, but it appears that the remedial measures are less than ideal.

Local resident Liz Spence has told The Edinburgh Reporter that there is now a manhole cover missing in the middle of the park which is used by children to play football. The smell is disgusting and there is still an area covered by raw sewage – all now guarded by four traffic cones after council officers visited earlier. The cones are totally inadequate and the council need to do more.”

We have reached out to @EdinHelp on Twitter to take some protective action, and have asked local councillors for assistance too.

Transport and Environment Convener Cllr Lesley Macinnes told The Edinburgh Reporter just before we published this article : “I haven’t known anything about this until just now I am disappointed to see the limited reaction to a serious sewage leak. I would urge everyone to stay away until it’s sorted properly. I will be picking this up as fast as possible with the relevant officials.

“If Scottish Water were out today then it may be that we are waiting for them to do something further, but we must mark this area out and protect it a bit better than we have done.”
