Police are appealing for information after an item left in the street in Colinton caused significant disruption to the area.

At around 10.40am this morning, Wednesday 21st September, the item was discovered outside Redford Barracks on Colinton Road. The area was cordoned off, with Colinton Road closed between Redford Road and Patie’s Road whilst police and military Explosive Ordnance Device teams carried out their assessments.

The item was deemed non-suspicious at 12.30pm, after testing by the EOD team. It is currently being recovered and cordons will be lifted once this is completed. The road will then be reopened.

A man was seen acting suspiciously in the area at around 10.30am, and police are keen to hear from anyone with information about him. He is described as white, in his 50s, tall and of heavy build with short brown hair. His appearance was dishevelled and he was wearing light coloured clothing, possibly green or beige.

Inspector Graeme Dignan of Drylaw Police Station has been overseeing the response, he said: “This item was not a threat and there was no danger to the public at any time, I would like to thank people in the area for their patience whilst this situation was brought to a safe conclusion.

“We are now investigating how the item came to be left outside the barracks, and want to speak to anyone who was in the Colinton/Craiglockhart/Colinton Mains areas this morning and may have seen the man described or has any other information that may assist.”
