Edinburgh North and Leith MP Deidre Brock has been appointed as a member of the Scottish Affairs Committee. Her appointment is subject to parliamentary approval but we asked her about it.

Deidre said : “I can’t wait to get stuck into the exciting programme of work on the Scottish Affairs Committee.

“I’m particularly pleased to start my new job with an inquiry into the EU referendum and how we can make sure Scotland’s vote for Remain is respected. There’s much work to be done and I look forward to playing my part.”

Over the weekend around 2,000 fish keepers descended on Dobbies Melville, and some queued from 8am to be the first over the door!

The new store has an aquatic concession with over 5,000 exotic invertebrates and tropical freshwater, marine, cold water and pond fish from all across the world for you to take home. There is also a koi pond where you can feed the fish.

Colin Christian, Fishkeeper Scotland Regional Director, said: “We are delighted that visitors turned up in record numbers to help us celebrate the official launch of our new Fishkeeper Scotland store at Dobbies Melville this weekend.

“It was great to welcome not only avid fishkeepers and hobbyist but also families who came from as far afield as the Borders, to enjoy a great day out and check out our new flagship store which we are very proud of.

“The feedback already received has been hugely positive not only on the layout and increased stock but also on the unusual and rare species that are now available, many of which have never been seen in Scotland.

“I’m confident the new store, which is our ninth store in Scotland and second in the city, will continue to be a huge hit with customers who are in great hands with the fantastic team we have on board who are all fishkeepers with incredible knowledge and experience in everything aquatic and who have done a great job getting the store ready in time for our big weekend.”

Edinburgh’s Festival Fringe invaded Waverley Mall with flash performances from the festival’s most exciting performers. Visitors to Edinburgh were able to enjoy the culture of the Fringe for FREE when shopping at Waverley Mall.

Throughout August, Fringe performers dropped into the Shopping Centre to the delight of shoppers.  This is the second time that Waverley Mall has become a venue for performances and this year it was bigger than ever before.  From singers to dancers to comedians, Waverley Mall was bustling with dynamic and interesting performances. The most popular acts included Countermeasure, a Canadian acapella group that wowed shoppers with their vocal stylings.

Stop! Owner Allison North commented ‘ It was really nice having the pop up performances on the mall, lots of people were stopping to watch. It definitely generated a lot of interest.’

Saxophonist Konrad Wiszniewski and pianist Euan Stevenson play contrasting venues on the tour that brings them to Edinburgh this month.

The duo will be appearing in Craiglockhart Parish Church on Saturday, 17 September the evening after their gig at Cupar Blues & Beyond Club in Fife.

“Blues and church music are two of the main ingredients in jazz,” says Wiszniewski, who is also one of the stars of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra’s saxophone section.  “Jazz musicians improvise on blues scales and a lot of jazz, especially the soul-jazz style that came out of the 1950s and 1960s, draws on gospel music, so we should be at home in both venues.”
