Musselburgh Racecourse is about more than just horses, with its events facilities and even a marriage license so that you can tie the knot there. But given that the main event is the thoroughbred horse racing, The Edinburgh Reporter spoke with Gordon Brown an expert racing broadcaster who visits many racecourses during the year to find out what he thinks of the Edinburgh course.
Brown is originally from Biggar in Lanarkshire where his father had a garage. He first got a job as a race reader with Raceform, and that has become an ambassadorial role for Scottish Racing. Today he was about to present the Musselburgh races on TV for Racing UK.
He explained: “Musselburgh race in the winter over jumps and flat racing here in the summer. It’s a very good flat racing course. The prize money is very good, that’s what happens here.
“Musselburgh punches above its weight for the size of the course compared to a course of the same size in the North of England. It is far superior in terms of prize money and indeed facilities. Of course the Queen was here earlier in the year to help celebrate the 200th anniversary of racing at Musselburgh so there has been a royal seal of approval.”

Although his view is very much as a horse racing destination the venue is also popular for events and conferences for meetings of 12 to 100 delegates. On racedays you can enjoy hospitality from Fish and Chips to stylish entertaining for you and your chums in the Queen’s Stand.
The venue is listed as a five star visitor attraction with great transport links and free parking. You can get more details of the fixtures coming up at Musselburgh here and you can enter our competition to win tickets for the Caledonian Brewery raceday here.
We used the new 113 East Coast Bus service which takes you from the city centre to a stop right outside the main entrance of the racecourse. The journey costs a standard £1.60 and if you go upstairs there are tables suggesting that these were the buses used on the 100 service before now. More details of the service here.
