Police in are investigating after a firearm was discharged in the Leith area last night.

Local officers responded to a report of a disturbance in Cables Wynd just after 11pm on Friday and upon arrival they found a male in his 20’s with serious leg injuries. He is now being cared for by medics at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and his condition is not believed to be life threatening.

Police are today appealing for anyone with information regarding this incident to come forward immediately.

DI Alan O’Brien of Edinburgh CID said: “An extensive investigation is now underway into this incident. Although this is at an early stage I’m satisfied this was an isolated attack and there is no ongoing threat to the wider public.

“An area of Cables Wynd is presently cordoned off as our investigation progresses and I thank the local community for their patience and cooperation.

“I can also reassure local residents that we will use every resource at our disposal to trace and arrest anyone involved in this crime as quickly as possible.

“We’re pursuing various lines of inquiry however anyone with information that can assist with the ongoing investigation can contact Police Scotland on 101. Alternatively, a report can be made anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
