Songlines was the Edinburgh International Festival event which took place yesterday across the city. It followed from the success of Fanfare last year, and involved choirs and members of the public during the finale singing in nine locations from Dalmeny to Rosslyn and even as far afield as St Mary’s Haddington.
The Edinburgh Reporter went to St Paul’s on Jeffrey Street and the first half of the event went without a hitch. Then the loud drumming started from the Fringe venue below, spoiling what was otherwise a wonderful event in beautiful location.
We spoke to Festival Director Fergus Linehan ahead of the singing about the idea for the event:

Edinburgh East MP Tommy Sheppard is hoping to become the SNP Deputy Leader in the upcoming election. As a former owner of The Stand he is well acquainted with some comedians and he is calling in a few favours to help raise some funds to help him.
He tells us that there are still some tickets left!
The last meeting of the Murrayfield Community Council on 9 August discussed many important matters including the planning decision on the Capability Scotland building on Ellersly Road. This was granted in spite of objections including one from the Community Council.
The next meeting of the community council will take place on 30 August at 7.30 at 2b Ormidale Terrace when the cycle path decision will be under discussion. This is an item which has attracted much comment from local retailers, local residents and cyclists alike.
YMCA Edinburgh helped tackle holiday hunger this summer for 3 weeks by providing free hot meals for children who were unable to access free school meals during the holidays.
Up to 30 children between the age of 5-8 years attended the playscheme each week taking part in crafts, games and loose parts play in the morning. At lunchtime parents and children’s siblings up to the age of 12 were invited to join the children for a hot lunch and an afternoon family activity to combat the pressure of families facing holiday hunger.
More than 360 meals were served to children and their families thanks to referrals from agencies in the area including; schools, social workers, family support organisations and health visitors. The kitchen supported the Make Lunch project, a nationwide initiative which aims to provide hot meals to children from low income families who would otherwise go without.
For more information on YMCA Edinburgh and their Make Lunch kitchen you can email admin@ymcaedinburgh.com, visit the website www.ymcaedinburgh.com or call 0131 553 7877. They are looking for future volunteers and financial support to try and provide a Make Lunch kitchen through the school holidays in the year.
