THE POINT
15th – 20th August 2016
The Grand Theatre, Surgeons Hall, Nicolson St, Edinburgh EH8 9DW
The Point is written, performed and produced by local Glasgow artists, a daring and challenging project driven by female artists: Every city has a dark little secret, a shifty place in the shadows where sex, drugs, prev’s, pimps and prossy’s can’t be missed.
The Point follows three of the local sex workers Cindy, Chargo and Amber through their past, present, future, hopes and fears that come with being a part of the oldest profession on Earth. This story celebrates these women’s toughness in a grim world while showing unflinchingly the realities of such a profession.
The Point was supposed to premier at The Arches Theatre in June 2015 but five days before our opening night The Arches sadly went into administration causing all shows to be cancelled. The Arches was one of the few venues in Glasgow for platforming new original material so to lose out on that opportunity so close to the opening night was a real disappointment but no near as big a loss as what the Arches closure will be to the theatre community.
The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the biggest arts festival in the world and there is no better place to platform the show but it can be a very expensive venture, fortunately with financial support from local business and in-kind donations such as free rehearsal space we’ve been able to make the run possible.
Director Mhari Watt who was my drama teacher almost ten years ago will be taking control of the play and she has a very empowering vision to bring the script to life. I understand the fringe is an incredibly challenging environment with over 3,000 shows but I hope you can find the time to review our show.
The play spans over three years 1989 – 1991 where we look into the grim world of Cindy, Chargo and Amber and the realities of their profession. All three of the characters of are on the same path but only at different stages. Cindy has been there the longest and truly wore down by life, what she’s seen what she’s had to do and ultimately has a very bleak view of the world. Amber has been working The Point for few years and she’s happy with the life. As time goes on and as a result of the inner conflict that Amber must face, she begins to transcend into hollow/emptiness Cindy has been for a long time. Then there’s Chargo who is very young and naive to the consequences of working in the sex industry.
