Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault which took place around 1.40 a.m. on Sunday in Rossie Place.
Members of the public contacted police after seeing two people assaulting a man in the street.
During this attack the victim sustained a serious head injury.
Officers responded along with the Scottish Ambulance Service and the man was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where he continues to be treated for his injuries.
Anyone who can assist officers with their ongoing investigation is asked to come forward.
The first suspect is described as male, white, mid-twenties, 6ft 4ins tall with a muscular build, short mousey brown hair and thick stubble. He was wearing a light-coloured t-shirt and jeans.
The second suspect is described as female, white, mid to late twenties, 5ft 7ins tall with shoulder-length curly blonde hair.
It is believed they entered a Range Rover style vehicle as they left the area.
Detective Constable Iain Wallace from the Violence Reduction Unit at Gayfield Police Stations said: “This appears to be a random assault, which has left the victim with no recollection of what happened and as such, we are keen to speak to anyone who can help us establish the full circumstances.
“Anyone who was on Rossie Place in the early hours of Sunday morning and who saw anything suspicious should contact police immediately.
“I would also ask that anyone who recognises the description of the suspects and can help us identify them also gets in touch.”

Police need to crack-down on the very obvious drug trade on this street. It has been going on for years, with different people but basically out of two houses on Rossie Place. There are also gangs of 4-5 young men who hang out at night. The drug dealers and their customers are extremely visible and a simple surveillance mission would uncover a great deal of trade.
Allowing this to continue puts regular taxpayers at risk.
