Grassmarket Community Cinema: Vertigo (15). The preposterous story of Scottie (James Stewart), a detective who develops a fear of heights after watching a colleague fall to his death. During his recovery, Scottie is approached by old pal Elster (Tom Helmore), who confides that his wife, Madeleine (Kim Novak), has been possessed by the spirit of Carlotta Valdes, a suicidal 18th-century aristocat. 
Sceptical Scottie agrees to follow Madeleine and after intervening in her attempted suicide, inevitably falls in love. However, an attack of vertigo renders Scottie incapable of preventing her death, which mentally breaks him. Picturehouses Discover Tuesdays: cult classics, an art-house gems and riveting documentaries – there’s always a chance to see something different and brilliant in the Cameo’s weekly slot. Today’s film is Arabian Nights: Volume One – The Restless One (15) (in Portugese with English subtitles). Following in the tradition of The Arabian Nights, Portuguese auteur Miguel Gomes (Tabu) uses his Scheherazade (Christa Alfaiate) as both a character and a framing device. 
Usually we would find her telling stories night after night so as to postpone her own execution 
at the hands of her husband the king, but in this first instalment of Gomes’s three-volume magnum opus, we instead meet the storyteller aboard a glitzy speedboat, narrating topical parables about venal bankers and politicians who are destroying the cultural and social fabric of Portugal and beyond. Thus we see a gaggle of fat-cat economists whose ruthless doctrines are driven by sexual impotence, a plague of wasps accompanying the mass sackings of shipyard workers, and Gomes himself deserting his film crew because of government-imposed funding cuts. 6pm, Tuesday 10th May, Cameo, Home Street. Folk Film Gathering: in partnership with Transgressive North and TradFest, Filmhouse presents the second edition of the world’s first festival of Folk Cinema. This year the Gathering’s programme focuses on a central theme of animals: sheep, goats, horses, cows, lions, whales and herring, and the stories that bind them to communities.

Studio Ghibli Forever: Laputa Castle In The Sky (PG) (In Japanese with English subtitles). The very first feature from Studio Ghibli, this action masterpiece gives the Indiana Jones franchise a run for its money. From the opening sequence, in which a young girl, Sheeta, floats down from the sky into the arms of apprentice miner Pazu, the film glows with adventure and magic, and we are soon off on a wild ride through the fantastical that grips and amazes. Light and Shadow: Architecture On Screen. Architecture and design play an important part in our everyday lives, both consciously and subconsciously shaping, physically and visually, the towns and cities we live in and the everyday objects we use. 
Films have often used architecture as an integral character, setting the atmosphere and forming an essential backdrop to plot. As Part of the 2016 Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design, the Edinburgh Architectural Association in conjunction with Filmhouse have brought together a series of feature films and accompanying Scottish shorts that explore the role of architecture and design within film and beyond. 
Today’s opening film is Blade Runner: The Final Cut (15). Adapted from Philip K Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Ridley Scott’s iconic dystopian classic is unquestionably one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made. The year is 2019, and LA is playing unwitting host to a group of escaped synthetic humans called replicants. Bred for slavery on off-world colonies and outlawed on earth, these illegal immigrants are hunted by Blade Runners, and Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) has the task of ‘retiring’ them. What follows is a visually stunning and thematically dense future noir that delves deep into what it means to be human. 5.45pm, Saturday 14th May, Filmhouse, Lothian Road. Filmhouse Junior: films for a younger audience. This week: The Iron Giant (PG): a young boy is obsessed with all things extra-terrestrial. He’s the only one in his small town to take seriously a fisherman’s reports of the landing of a metal giant in the forest, and the only one to go looking for it. Picturehouses Vintage Sundays: classic films back on the big screen. Today’s film is Cinema Paradiso (PG) Told in flashback as successful film director Salvatore returns to his native Sicilian village, Cinema Paradiso centres on the friendship between the young Salvatore and the irascible projectionist Alfredo (Philippe Noiret), who preserves a collection of footage censored from the local cinema programme by the priest. Salvatore inherits from Alfredo not only a love of film, 
but also his job, as the Nuovo Cinema Paradiso enjoys a brief term of glory as the hub of the community before the days of TV and pop. Romantic, nostalgic, funny and exuberant, Cinema Paradiso is all the more memorable for the winning performances by the great Philippe Noiret and ten-year-old Salvatore Cascio. 1pm, Sunday 15th May, Cameo, Home Street. Light and Shadow: Architecture On Screen. Today’s first film, showing at 3.40pm, is Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House (U). The third (and final) pairing of Cary Grant and Myrna Loy, Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House is an entertaining screwball comedy set during the post-war rush to suburbia. 
Keen to escape the confines of their apartment in busy New York, advertising executive Jim Blandings and his wife Muriel set to work on fixing up an old house in rural Connecticut, which turns out to be rather more dilapidated than first thought… The film will be introduced by Dr Glyn Davis (Edinburgh College of Art). Plus short The Banana Republic. Today’s second film, showing at 6.05pm, is Manufactured Landscapes (12A) in which, in a series of extraordinary visual portraits, renowned artist Edward Burtynsky travels through China photographing the evidence and effects of its massive industrial revolution and the implicit impact on the environment.
