Two police officers and a teenager required hospital treatment following an incident in Morningside last night.

Police were called to the area after a report about a group of youths having set a fire in the area. The youths dispersed but one was apprehended and during a struggle it is understood that the officers and the youth fell through a shop window.

Morningside Road was closed for a period but has since re-opened and enquires are ongoing into the circumstances.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Police in Edinburgh responded to Morningside Road at around 8:40pm on Saturday, January 9, following a report of a group of youths having set a fire in the area.

“Upon police arrival, a group of youths ran off however officers apprehended a male in connection with their inquiries.

“The teenager struggled with the officers resulting in him sustaining an injury to his neck and he was taken by ambulance to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.

“Both officers were also taken to hospital for treatment after one sustained an injury to his leg and the other injured his arm. During the incident, the window of a local shop was smashed.

“The road was closed while inquiries were carried out at the scene but reopened shortly after 10:15pm.

“An investigation into this matter is ongoing as police work to establish the full set of circumstances and anyone with relevant information is asked to contact 101.”
