The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) is pleased to announce that HRH The Princess Royal, the Society’s Royal Patron, delivered a talk as part of the Tribal Elders: Words of Wisdom series at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo on the evening of Thursday 15 October.

The Tribal Elders talk, entitled “Committed to conservation: you can make a difference”, was a sell-out event held at the Discovery and Learning Centre at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo. The Princess Royal shared with the audience her experiences in the field of conservation and wildlife through links with a wide variety of organisations and charities, both in the United Kingdom and overseas. As a thank you for her support as Royal Patron, HRH The Princess Royal was presented with a gift of a handmade hair comb adorned with an intricately crafted greater one-horned rhino; created by RZSS Silversmith in Residence Bryony Knox.  The gift was presented on a tray, handcrafted especially for The Princess Royal by residents of the local community in Budongo, Uganda.

RZSS’s Tribal Elders: Words of Wisdom talks are an ongoing series of events featuring some of the world’s most inspiring and innovative speakers. The series aims to rekindle the ancient tradition of oral storytelling between older and younger generations and offers a unique platform to distil the wisdom of a lifetime. Previous hosts of the Tribal Elders series include renowned primatologist and conservationist, Dr. Jane Goodall DBE (Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and a UN Messenger for Peace), Professor Aubrey Manning OBE, who is recognised as one of the country’s leading authorities on animal behaviour as well as being a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Professor Roger Wheater OBE, Director of the RZSS for some 26 years from 1972 through 1998.

HRH The Princess Royal’s visit coincided with RZSS celebrating the 10th anniversary of its involvement in the Budongo Conservation Field Station (BCFS) in Uganda, and the 25th anniversary of the field station itself. Core funded by RZSS, BCFS combines cutting edge primatology research with community-based conservation initiatives and behaviour change.

Chris West, CEO of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, said: “The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland remains honoured to have the support and patronage of HRH The Princess Royal. The lecture itself highlighted the breadth of her conservation and wildlife knowledge and, as with all talks in the Tribal Elders series, we hope that the audience left inspired to think differently about the global issues raised and ready to explore what they can do to take action.”

“It was particularly fitting to welcome Her Royal Highness in the year that we celebrate the tenth anniversary of RZSS’s involvement with the Budongo Conservation Field Station in Uganda, as well as the 25th anniversary of the field station itself. The Princess Royal has always been a keen supporter of BCFS and even helped open the Budongo Trail at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo in 2008.”

The Integration Joint Board for Health and Social Care confirmed the appointment of Robert McCulloch-Graham into the new role of Chief Officer to the Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership yesterday morning.

This is a key appointment for the Partnership and the Council as we work together towards a fully integrated way of delivering our health and social care services across the City. This will involve the development and delivery of a range of frontline locality-based and city-wide services, working with the NHS and other key stakeholders including the Third Sector.

In my announcement yesterday, I highlighted the strong working links that we will have with the Partnership. As Chief Officer, Rob will report jointly to Tim Davison (NHS) and me. In addition, we will also have a close working relationship through our newly created Head of Public Protection and Chief Social Work Officer role, which will be led by Michelle Miller.

Rob began his career as a maths and science teacher before moving onto youth and community work, youth justice, social care and public health.

In his most recent position, as Corporate Director for Education, Social Care and Wellbeing at Tower Hamlets Council, he was responsible for nearly £0.5B of revenue expenditure and a workforce in excess of 3,000. Here he majored on bringing together Health and Social Care services and placed Tower Hamlets as an “NHS Vanguard” borough for integration.

Andrew Kerr, Chief Executive, City of Edinburgh Council, said: “We continue to work closely with NHS Lothian to bring Edinburgh’s health and social care services together and Rob’s appointment is an important step forward in this process.

“The role will be wide-ranging and immensely challenging, working with stakeholders across the city to deliver a great service.

“I would like to congratulate Rob on his appointment and look forward to working closely with him and the Partnership to help shape the future Health and Social Care services for Edinburgh. ”

Without doubt, this will be the best feel good, rootin’ tootin’, twangy, barnstorming banjoed night out of the year.
