A young Hibernian Development Squad were defeated 5-0 by Celtic in the SPFL Development League at Ainslie Park yesterday.

Goals from  Lafferty, Miller, Nesbitt, Breslin and Hendry secured the points for the Hoops and to make matters worse, Callum Crane suffered a suspected metatarsal injury.

After the game, Joe McBride, Hibs U20 Development Coach, told the club website: “I didn’t make much of their first half performance.

“Celtic have good players, but we made them look even better by standing off them and running alongside them and no physical challenge – I think we made it far too easy for Celtic in the first half.

Had Scott’s effort found the net, the game would have gone to 2-1, but McBride felt that the miss did not matter as he feels his side should have been performing better.

“It shouldn’t take a goal for the players to apply themselves better. They should be applying themselves from the first whistle and taking on the challenge of playing against the top sides and the top players.

“You want to be the best player in your own team and then the best player on the pitch. If you can say that against the better teams, then it means you’re making progress. I was really disappointed in the first half, a little bit better in the second – but the game had gone then.”

“We lost two in the game against Falkirk and ended up with nine men and we ended up with ten men today. But that happens – that’s football.”

Hibernian Development Squad: Sean Brennan, Aaron Dunsmore (Donaldson, 71), Jordan McGregor, Kevin Waugh, Callum Crane, Ali Smith, Aaron Scott, Ben Stirling, Conner Duthie (Murray, 69), Adam Watson (Breen, 61), Oli Shaw.
