There is only one petition which remains open on the council website at present. This is the Petition to Save the Adult Learning Project and it needs to have enough signatures by 27 August otherwise it will fall. The Adult Learning Project began its life in Gorgie/Dalry as an initiative of South West Edinburgh Team of Lothian Region’s Community Education Service.
The petition reads:
For over 36 years, the Adult Learning Project(ALP) has engaged adults from across Edinburgh in democratic, community education programmes. Although the project has over 200 members, a committed and active board of trustees and a dedicated pool of supporters and volunteers, it is no longer receiving the support it requires from the City of Edinburgh Council(CEC) to sustain the development, implementation and evaluation of learning programmes to meet the needs of communities in Tollcross and Edinburgh.
In the past year and a half, project volunteers have worked with over 300 people from Tollcross to identify local learning needs and issues of importance for the community. To build upon this work, and ALP’s impressive track record in the provision of adult education opportunities, the project urgently requires the support of a dedicated community development worker.
The Scottish Government and the CEC have been explicit in their commitment to the provision of lifelong learning opportunities for communities in Scotland. ALP supports this commitment, working with many adults, including those facing social isolation and multiple barriers to learning. Without adequate CEC support however, ALP’s ability to provide educational and capacity-building opportunities will be lost. We, the undersigned, call upon the CEC to provide a dedicated community development worker for the Adult Learning Project so that this unique, world renowned project can continue to support lifelong learning opportunities for all.

The Edinburgh International Book Festival announced today that acclaimed pianist, James Rhodes, will be speaking in Charlotte Square Gardens on Sunday 30 August at 9.45pm. Rhodes had to overturn a high court injunction to allow him to publish his memoir Instrumental. The book is a candid, harrowing account of his childhood, the mental illnesses this trauma sparked and a moving, inspiring tale of how classical music saved his life. This intensely personal story is interspersed with insights into the extraordinary lives and work of classical composers explaining how music transform lives.
Nick Barley, Director of the Edinburgh International Book Festival said “This is a fascinating introduction and insight into classical music looking at some of the key composers and pieces of music that have defined James’s life. He himself is a great champion of the importance of music schools, mental health awareness and enabling and supporting victims of abuse and we are very much looking forward to welcoming him to the Book Festival in August.”
The Edinburgh International Book Festival receives funding from Creative Scotland and the City of Edinburgh Council and this year welcomes over 900 participants from 55 different countries to Charlotte Square Gardens and runs from Saturday 15 to Monday 31 August 2015. Entrance to the Gardens is FREE. Full details of the programme can be found at www.edbookfest.co.uk and tickets are available for all events from www.edbookfest.co.uk or through the Box Office on 0845 373 5888.
