MESH artists collective are showing their latest work in “Earthworks” at Patriothall Gallery, Stockbridge, from 25th April to 3rd May 2015. The centrepiece of the exhibition is a large-scale collaborative installation of seven hangings and wall pieces inspired by the diversity of Scotland’s terrain. Other works include prints, paintings, textile works and sculptures exploring soil, geology, landforms and human relationships with the land. The exhibition will also feature sketchbooks documenting the processes used in the development of the work.
Barbara Rowell, Mesh spokesperson, said “We are excited to be presenting our new work in the context of 2015 International Year of Soils. We hope that the exhibition will encourage appreciation of soils, and the plants that grow on them, and that visitors will be intrigued by the different techniques we have used to explore these themes.”
MESH is a group of emerging artists from diverse backgrounds who studied together on the part-time BA in Combined Studies at Edinburgh College of Art – the only course of its kind in Scotland. The course is uniquely flexible, allowing people from all walks of life to realise their ambitions to study art while carrying on with their other responsibilities such as work, family or caring for dependents. When the College of Art was merged with Edinburgh University in 2011, the part-time degree closed to new entrants and the last students will graduate in 2017.
MESH members set up their collective to share ideas and experience, carry out collaborative projects and exhibitions and provide peer support as they emerge from art college into the real world. Members live in Edinburgh, the Borders, Fife, East Lothian and the Isle of Skye. They share a common interest in the natural environment and promoting themes of sustainability and ecological matters in their working practice.
