The council introduced a pilot scheme for timed waste collections from businesses in Rose Street in January this year. This is partly in response to the new Waste (Scotland) Regulations which demand that all businesses present recyclable material for collection from the beginning of the year, but is also an effort to get rubbish off our streets and create a more pleasant environment. In common with schemes introduced in Westminster and Manchester the businesses must keep their rubbish indoors until a certain time when their waste may be put out for collection.
The pilot project has also been introduced in the Royal Mile in February and on Leith Walk from the beginning of this month. Leith Walk traders were very vocal about the need to get rid of large industrial waste bins from their pavements during the design phase for works to be carried out to improve Leith Walk.
The difference this change has already made to Rose Street has to be seen to be believed. So here is a slideshow!
