An exhibition of the work of photographer Stuart Armitt marks the culmination of a year which began with his selection from more than a hundred photographers in the spring to win the position of Festival Photographer 2013.

Light and Shade opens at The Hub tomorrow Tuesday 12 November and runs through to spring 2014. It is free.

Light and Shade offers you a glimpse into the rich and diverse archive of photographs which Stuart took across many hidden aspects of the Festival, in rehearsal rooms, stage set-ups, backstage corridors, schools, receptions and foyers.

Festival Photographer 2013 is an award for an emerging photographer supported by The Morton Charitable Trust which collaborates with the Festival each year to offer an emerging photographer this unique access and opportunity, and to mount this exhibition.

Stuart is a graduate of photography at Edinburgh Napier University and is now establishing himself as a freelance photographer currently based in Edinburgh.

Jonathan Mills, Edinburgh International Festival Director said:- ‘We selected Stuart for his enormous energy, charm and natural curiosity, qualities that endeared him to the Festival’s artists and staff alike, enabling him to access more candid, off-stage moments. I would like to thank the Trustees of The Morton Charitable Trust for their vision and commitment, to both the Festival and the talented photographers who go on this adventure with us each year. We hope you have a chance to pop into The Hub and enjoy this glimpse behind-the-scenes.’

Stuart Armitt, Festival Photographer 2013 said:- ‘There is no denying the challenges that face new graduates within the creative industries today. To be offered the role of the International Festival’s official photographer 2013 was not only a great privilege but could not have come at a greater time in the development of my career.

‘To say that I have grown in confidence as a photographer is an understatement. Creatively and technically my work has vastly improved; however it is in my professional development that this role really comes into its own. This opportunity has focused my mind on my future development and who I want to be as a photographer. To be offered the opportunity to be part of this festival in the most creative of ways was a privilege. You are allowed access to nearly every part of how a festival on this scale is put together and the people that make it happen. These people made this experience truly unforgettable.’
