Scottish Youth Cup Second Round Sunday 22 September 2013 – Tynecastle
It was an Edinburgh derby in the Scottish Youth Cup on Sunday as Hearts and Spartans under 20 teams clashed at Tynecastle. Given the current set-up in Gorgie, it was always likely Hearts would have a strong team against their city rivals and so it proved. Hearts coach Darren Murray included Billy King and Dale Carrick, both first team regulars as well as Sam Nicholson who also featured for Hearts in the SPFL at Ross County 24 hours earlier.
Goals from Gary Oliver and Carrick put Hearts two goals ahead at the interval before Blair Atkinson pulled one back for Spartans. Further goals from the impressive King, Rhys Craigie and another two Carrick strikes completed a convincing performance for the young Jambos.
Spartans, however, can take several plus points from a game against opponents who were clearly more experienced.
Hearts: Hamilton, L. Smith, McGhee, A. King, Ford, Beith, B. King, Nicholson, Oliver, McKirdy, Carrick.
Spartans: Carswell, Imlah, Mair, Dickson, K. Buchanan, Irving, Brown, Dishingston, Atkinson, Stewart, McIntosh.
Top man: Billy King
