We all grew up did we not with the joke,”Why was Holy Rood? Because she looked up Arthur’s Seat!” Boom Tish.

The volcanic mound is another iconic one in our capital city and now a stunning display of images detailing the history of Arthur’s Seat has been unveiled at Edinburgh’s Central Library in the first major exhibition about the landmark. A Mountain in our Midst, displayed in the Central Library Mezzanine area, details the history of Arthur’s Seat – from its geological beginnings as a volcano to its influence on art and literature and concluding with its place in modern day Edinburgh.

Images have been taken from the Edinburgh & Scottish Collection of Central Library’s archive of prints and photographs, with additional items borrowed from Archaeology Scotland, The Museum of Edinburgh, Canongate Kirk and contemporary artists, with supporting material from the Edinburgh Geological Society and National Museums Scotland. Edinburgh City Libraries has been working with Valerie Fiddes, a researcher who has worked with professors of art and architecture and has managed the University of Edinburgh’s Talbot Rice, to source images for the exhibition.

Deputy Lord Provost Councillor Deidre Brock, formally opened the exhibition which will run until 31 August.

She said: “It’s staggering is amazing to think that such an iconic landmark hasn’t previously been part of a major exhibition into its history and influence on modern day life.

“Arthur’s Seat, once described as “the stone heart of Edinburgh’s soul” is a world-famous focal point of the city, climbed by thousands of residents and tourists each year.

“The site is steeped in history and has influenced art and literature over hundreds of years, bringing infamy to this ancient volcano. I’m delighted that Central Library will play host to such an important and worthwhile exhibition.”

Lorna Ewan, Head of Visitor Experience, Content and Learning at Historic Scotland said:-“Arthur’s Seat is a much-loved Edinburgh landmark so it’s wonderful to see it taking centre-stage in this exhibition. For the people of Edinburgh it’s an iconic part of the city’s fabric and it’s hugely popular with visitors from across the world.

“There is so much fascinating history and archaeology associated with Arthur’s Seat so I’m delighted that people are being given the opportunity to learn more about this increasingly fragile part of our cityscape.”

Central Library opening hours are:

Monday to Wednesday: 10.00 – 20.00

Thursday to Saturday: 10.00 – 17.00
