The Edinburgh Reporter Police cordon

Police Scotland is appealing for witnesses following a distraction theft in Edinburgh.

The incident happened around 4.30pm on Thursday 20th June at an address in Northfield Broadway.

A 90-year-old man and his 89-year-old wife and just returned home when two females called at their door. Upon answering, the females engaged the couple in conversation and asked to borrow a pen and paper.

When the occupants went to search for writing implements, the suspects followed them into the house before producing a sheet, which obscured the couple’s view of the doorway.

At this time a third individual has entered the property and stolen a quantity of jewellery and three-figure sum of cash from inside.

Both females then left and were last seen walking north towards Portobello Road.

Police were contacted over the weekend after the victims realised they had been robbed and officers are now keen to hear from anyone who can assist with their enquiries.

The first suspect is described as white, mid-thirties, around 5ft 5ins tall with a round build, tanned complexion and black hair that sat just below her jaw line. She was wearing a tight-fitted dress with blue and red straps crossing at the chest and spoke with a foreign accent.

The second suspect is described as white, mid-forties, 6ft tall with a medium build and short grey hair. She was wearing a black skirt suit; black round framed glasses and carried a blue canvas shopping bag. She also spoke with a foreign accent.

Detective Constable Ben Leathes said: “The elderly occupants were trying to assist two women, who appeared to be having trouble articulating in English, when they were robbed within their own home.

“We would urge anyone who remembers seeing anything suspicious in the Northfield Broadway area last Thursday to contact police immediately.

“Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the suspects, or who has information relevant to this investigation is also asked to come forward.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
