The Council is to take on an additional 50 Modern Apprentices this year as part of our commitment to the Edinburgh Guarantee. This was announced at a conference to launch of the Council’s five year economic strategy for the city today.
The apprenticeships are targeted at young people from Edinburgh who left school in 2010, 2011 or 2012.
Last year the Council created 50 additional Modern Apprenticeships in a wide range of Occupational Areas. We have apprentices training to be Gas Engineers, HGV Mechanics, Youth Workers, Arborists, Social Care Workers, Library Assistants and many other occupational areas.
Last year the Council also experimented in a new area, Care for the Elderly. We took on eight MA Assistant Social Care Workers, who while working in our care homes for the elderly are studying for an SVQ at level 3 in Social Care.
Council Leader, Andrew Burns, said: “This is strong evidence that we are leading from the front on the vision of the Edinburgh Guarantee that every school leaver in Edinburgh will leave school with the choice of a job, training or further education opportunity available to them.
“Care for the elderly is not an obvious choice for young people starting out in their careers, and we have been surprised how many young people are willing to work in care and how well they have progressed in their time with us. The experiment has been so successful that we are going to recruit another 14 Modern Apprentice Assistant Social Care Workers this year.”

In addition to the Modern Apprenticeship programme the Council will also offer 80 Inspiring Young People training places which include a six month paid placement with an Edinburgh Employer.
