This weekend in Moffat, a short drive out of the city, there are events taking place which marry books, photography and gardens.

There will be a summer long exhibition of photographs by Jennifer Gough-Cooper who is a photographer, author and art historian. One part of the exhibition is called Paths and this comprises a suite of 12 photographs taken at Little Sparta the garden created by Scottish poet, Ian Hamilton Finlay at Dunsyre, Lanarkshire. The other part to her exhibition is called Kirstenbosch which will show 12 photos of South Africa’s Botanical Garden. This is open to the public from 26 May to 27 June 2012 between 11 a.m and 6 p.m.

Beyond the Garden Gate is an event taking place this Saturday 26 May 2012 at the Town Hall Moffat at 2p.m. as part of Moffat Book Events which is on between Saturday and Sunday. This will be a panel discussion with audience Q & A on the subject of What are Gardens For? The National Trust garden history specialist, Richard Wheeler will be one of those on the panel.

Then on Sunday 27 May at Craigieburn Garden at 11a.m. Jennifer Gough-Cooper will be in conversation with Richard Wheeler about the photographs she has taken in South Africa. Jennifer’s book Origins is also available for purchase.

Jennifer Gough-Cooper was brought up in England and studied at Hornsey College of Art in the 1960s. Jennifer joined the Richard Demarco Gallery in 1969 and was responsible for co-curating Strategy: Get Arts in 1970. Following three years in Edinburgh, Jennifer contributed her organizational skills to Documenta 5 in Kassel 1972. As an exhibition organizer, she was involved in the Marcel Duchamp retrospective which formed the inaugural show at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, in 1977. Jennifer’s later extensive research of the artist culminated in the book Marcel Duchamp: Work and Life, published for the exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi, Venice in 1993.

 

After an extended visit to Cape Town in 1998, Jennifer held her first exhibition of black and white photographs at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens. These photographs, all taken within Kirstenbosch, formed the inaugural art exhibition at the National Botanic Garden of Wales.

 

Her book Apropos Rodin inspired by the work of the French sculptor in its setting at the Musée Rodin, Paris, was published in 2006. Selected Rodin photographs have been exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art, London, the Musée Rodin, Paris, and the Craig Krull Gallery, Santa Monica.
