SNP Councillor Stefan Tymkewycz
Craigentinny/Duddingston Ward
“I’m pleased for the residents of Fillyside who have been campaigning for a bus service in the area; there will be a consultation with residents for a new service. It has been an issue that I, and others, have been lobbying for, ever since Lothian Buses stopped the Number 12 along Seafield. The funding for the consultation and new bus service has been included in the council’s budget for 2012/13.
In fact, £26m additional investment for 2012/13 has been approved for priority areas, e.g. £3m for roads and pavements, including pot holes. £4.1m for school buildings repairs, £250k for school books and supplies, £1m to assist young people finding positive destinations, £2.5m for the elderly, £400k for improved support for carers, £500k to refurbish care homes, and much more. These are just a few examples of the extra investment in front line services being made by the Council in 2012/13.
For the past few years I have had the privilege to sit on the Police Board and scrutinise the work of Lothian and Borders Police. Over that period I am pleased that the number of ‘youth’ related calls the police receive in our area has nearly halved. The number of reports of vandalism in East Edinburgh has dropped from an average of 140 per month to 80, and minor assaults have gone down by one third. However there is still much work to be done to make our neighbourhood even cleaner and safer. Over the past few years I have worked closely with council officials using my previous police experience to help shape the way we deal with and prevent anti-social behaviour that impacts on our daily lives. I will continue to work with others to make things even better.”
