They came, they saw, they gave Edinburgh a right kicking – or so the scoreline would suggest.

First league match of the new season and new league, the RaboDirect PRO12, had Cardiff playing Edinburgh at Murrayfield. Cardiff opened the scoring after seconds of the match with a penalty straight from the kick-off.Edinburgh followed with one of their own a few minutes later before Cardiff went over to score the first of the evenings four tries.

An exchang of penalties saw the half time whistle blow with the score 14-9 in favour of the visitors. The second half opened well for Edinburgh, with a dominant period of nearly 20 minutes which left the scoreline 15-14 to Edinburgh and a buoyant crowd looking for a win in the first game. Sadly, nobody informed Cardiff and the Welsh team ran in the other three tries of the night along with a few kicks to run out well deserved winners 38 points to 14.

Overall, Edinburgh played better than the scoreline, but failed, in that uniquely ‘Scottish team’ way, to convert pressure into points/goals. Cardiff played to their advantages and appeared to have more strength in depth – particularly important when International duty calls.
