Two Edinburgh nurseries have been awarded a prestigious Green Flag by Eco Schools Scotland.
Part of Keep Scotland Beautiful, Eco Schools Scotland award Green Flag status to nurseries and schools across the country that have set up a variety of environmental projects. The Edinburgh nurseries were commended by judges for their range of eco projects.
Blackhall Nursery took part in an annual Birdwatch scheme, litter survey and active recycling project, encouraging visitors and parents to bring materials to be recycled.
Lochrin Nursery launched a “Don’t Dump, Donate” day asking parents to donate unwanted items which they recycle and sell on. Money is then used to buy equipment for the nursery including recycle bins. Parents were also involved by setting up an Eco committee with the children taking an active part.
In August 2010, eco-conscious insurance company, The Green Insurance Company teamed up with Eco Schools Scotland to develop new learning resources specifically designed for nursery school children to develop their own environmental projects, and is delighted to learn of the success of Blackhall and Lochrin.
Head of The Green Insurance Company, Gaynor Wood, said: “We’re delighted to support Eco Schools Scotland in promoting the Green Flag scheme to nursery schools and send our congratulations to Blackhall and Lochrin nurseries for achieving their Green Flag status. The work the children and teachers have done to set up their projects has been fantastic and we hope all the children enjoyed working on it.”
Kate Campbell, Manager of Eco Schools Scotland, said: “We were very impressed with the efforts of Blackhall and Lochrin nurseries in producing a diverse range of wonderful environmental projects. Our new early years materials aim to introduce eco topics to our very youngest children and hopefully encourage their environmentally friendly behaviours to continue throughout their lives. The nurseries who have achieved Green Flag status are a great example of how these materials can help to achieve that.”
Since the launch of the partnership in August 2010, more than 40 nurseries across Scotland have now achieved Green Flag Status.
