Neil Cuthbert has been selected again to stand for the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party at what will be the third by-election in Colinton/Fairmilehead ward in a few months.

The local Fairmilehead resident will stand in the by election which will take place on 23 January 2025.

Independent candidate David Henry has also confirmed he will stand again.

The dual by-election was called following the resignation of new councillor Liberal Democrat Louise Spence and the SNP councillor’s resignation after moving to a job with The Scottish Government.

Mr Cuthbert said: “I am honoured to once again stand for election in Colinton/Fairmilehead. As a long-time Fairmilehead resident, I understand the frustration local people feel about recent events. Our community deserves stable, committed representation that puts local interests first. If elected, I pledge to work tirelessly alongside Jason Rust to address the issues that matter most to residents – from improving our local services to ensuring our community’s voice is heard at City Chambers. We need councillors who will stay the course and deliver for our area, not use it as a stepping stone.”

Jason Rust the sole councillor for the ward since the recent resignations said: “I am delighted that Neil is putting himself forward to work alongside me as a strong team representing local residents. As the runner up in November, Neil is in pole position to go one better this time. He cares strongly about his local area and will campaign hard on the issues which matter to residents. I know my constituents feel badly let down by the Liberal Democrats, but with Neil they are assured of a genuine straightforward commitment to the ward and an honest community based approach.”

Mr Cuthbert stood in the November 2024 election when he got 1,454 votes behind the winning Liberal Democrat candidate who got 2,683 first preference votes.
