Alexis Jones, aged six, who is a member of the Gracemount club, was one of the stars of Edinburgh Leisure’s annual gymnastics display at Meadowbank – despite it being her first-ever competition.

Alexis also takes part in ballet and swimming.

Participants at Meadowbank ranged in age from 3-18 years-old with multiple teams including Drum Brae, Ainslie Park, Tumbles and Kirkliston as well as Gracemount.

A total of 23 different dance teams figured on the day and Emma from Stenhousemuir gave a solo performance.

Alexis’ dad, Eric Jones, a college lecturer and rugby coach, summed up the mood in the stands. He said: “It was great to see so many young gymnasts from the local area performing in front of a fairly big crowd, a lot for their first performance.

“The quality of the performances and the overall show from Edinburgh Leisure was really good. From a sport development and participation point of view, it’s encouraging to see the clubs busy.”

ONE TO WATCH: Alexis’ family said she was “nervous at first but soon settled once on the mat.”
