Former First Minister, Humza Yousaf, has designed a tartan in honour of his family.
The Humza Yousaf tartan celebrates six decades since the SNP politician’s grandparents arrived in Scotland from Pakistan.
It includes green to represent the flag of Pakistan and the Yousaf family’s Islamic identity, as well as the blue and white of the Scottish saltire.
It has now been recorded in the official Scottish Register of Tartans in Edinburgh.
Mr Yousaf made history in 2023 when he became the first Muslim or Asian politician to be sworn in as First Minister of Scotland.
He worked with Brian Halley, co-owner of Slanj Kilts, to design the new tartan, which could be made into various garments for the family.
Mr Yousaf said the tartan was not only for his family but for anyone who wants to wear it.
He said: “It is 60 years since my paternal grandparents Muhammad and Anwari Yousaf made the journey from a small city in the south of Pakistan’s Punjab, Mian Channu, to our home here in Scotland.
“To commemorate that journey I am absolutely delighted to have officially registered the Yousaf tartan. I hope you like it as much as I do.
“The green is there to represent Pakistan, my grandparents’ home and the blue to represent our home here in Scotland.
“Although we are four generations of Yousafs this tartan is not there to be just enjoyed by the Yousaf clan but there for anybody who wants to wear it, so I hope you like it as much as I do.”
The tartan is officially known as the Humza Yousaf, rather than Yousaf tartan, as individuals cannot register a surname or clan tartan.
Mr Halley, who has provided kilts in various existing tartans for Mr Yousaf in the past, said: “We are very proud to be part of creating the new Humza Yousaf tartan. His family’s heritage is very important to him.”
Registration notes for the new tartan state: “A tartan for Humza Yousaf and his family to commemorate 60 years since Anwari and Muhammad Yousaf arrived in Scotland from Mian Channu, Pakistan.
“Since then, the family has grown considerably and on to their fourth generation of Yousafs in Scotland.
“The green in the tartan is intended to represent both the colours of the flag of Pakistan and the Islamic identity of the Yousaf family and blue is intended to pay homage to the Saltire of Scotland.”
