After losing his Westminster seat at the General Election, Tommy Sheppard said he will not stand in the 2026 Scottish parliamentary election, but he will play a part in the independence campaign which he says must go on.

He said: “The independence campaign needs to refocus and regroup and the SNP needs to reconsider its role as the political leadership of that movement.

“There’s a myriad of things we need to think about.

“We need to have a civil discussion and try and assess what went wrong and what we need to do to put it right. There’s no quick fix.”

He did say to the Chief Returning Officer that he can rest assured the correspondence about the Portobello toilets will now come to an end.

“It has been the best job of my life and one of the most wonderful experiences of my life.”
