A collection of paintings, works on paper and sculpture by Colourist, JD Fergusson (1874-1961) has sold in its entirety for more than half a million pounds at auction.

The works were part of the auction house’s flagship Scottish Paintings & Sculpture sale held on Thursday live online and in person in Edinburgh.

The Leith-born artist and sculptor who abandoned a career in medicine to train at art school, became the most internationally recognised of the group known at The Scottish Colourists.

His interest in travel impacted his work and he was highly influenced by the French modern movements of the twentieth century.

He established his first studio in Edinburgh in 1902 and became great friends with the artist S.J. Peploe.

One of Peploe’s paintings, Still Life with Fruit and Flowers, described by the auctioneers as “remarkable” was also sold last night to an international collector for £425,201.

Alice Strang, Senior Specialist Modern & Contemporary Art with Lyon & Turnbull said:”The night belonged to the Scottish Colourist John Duncan Fergusson, with paintings, sculptures, works on paper and even one of his sketchbooks celebrating the 150th anniversary of his birth being 100% sold and achieving over half a million pounds in total.

Paintings by Fergusson’s fellow Colourists S. J. Peploe and G. L. Hunter also inspired energetic bidding, with Peploe’s remarkable Still Life with Fruit and Flowers acquired by an international collector for £425,201.

“Special mention must also go to E. A. Hornel’s rare and beautiful A Japanese Tea Garden which soared to £100,201 and to the ever popular Joan Eardley, whose Catterline went well over top estimate to achieve £45,201.”
