Alfie Smith has committed to a second season coaching Edinburgh South women’s football team after a progressive ’23-24 campaign.

Under his guidance the South, founded only in 2022, were competitive in the SWFL East League and won their first-ever Scottish Cup tie, by 21-0 against Brora, before bowing out in the next round against Dyce.

A former Hibs and Spartans coach, Alfie said: “We believe this has been a big breakthrough season for South. And the club is clearly ambitious to achieve even more next year

“The potential is enormous when you look at the number of players coming through the age groups Our job is to fly the flag in the women’s game and it’s an honour to do that as head coach.”

Joe Sneddon, Edinburgh South chief executive, said: “As the largest community football club in the East of Scotland our commitment to driving forward the success of the women’s and girls’ section is ingrained in our club’s ethos.”
