Craig Halkett has made over 100 appearances for Hearts since joining from Livingston in 2019 and he has penned a new contract until summer 2026.

The central defender has recovered from a serious leg injury and re-established himself in the side.

The 28-year-old player has proved himself as a leader and Kirkintilloch-born Halkett will be in contention for a slot in the side to face Aberdeen at Tynecastle on Saturday (kick-off 3.00pm).

Steven Naismith, Hearts’ head coach, said it was positive that Halkett has signed a new contract and added: “Aside from his obvious ability, he’s a leader and well-respected inside the dressing-room.

“He has had a torrid time of it last season with injuries andn you could see that nhis presenve on the pitch was missed.”

Looking forward to the game, Aberdeen manager Bary Robson still believes that his men  can finish third in the cinch Premiership despite thier midweek draw which leaves them 16 points adrift of Hearts.

Hearts have 39 points from 22 games and currently sit in third position.

Aberdeen are seventh with 23 points from 19 games.

They have scored 23 goals and shipped 30 while Hearts have scored 27 goals and let in 20.

The Gorgie side have a superior record over the last five games with four wins and a draw while Aberdeen have three wins and a draw and one defeat.

The Dons boss said that his men need to go on a run and perform well and added: “We did that last year. It will be a big ask, but we believe we’ve got to fight for every point.”
